How to Select and Store Pears

Picking pears is as important as choosing other fruit and vegetables. It goes without saying that the condition and ripeness of pears matter a lot when it comes to their taste properties and aroma. When you select any fruit, you wish it to be ripe and juicy. This rule does not always work well when it comes to selecting pears. And here is why.

 

The fact is that pears are those fruit, some sorts of which have to be harvested when they are not ripe yet. This means that they can be available for sale even if they are not completely ripe, which means that you should buy them and keep at the room temperature until they ripen from the inside. So, if you see pears that look green and are very firm, this does not mean that they are unripe and will remain in this condition. Just inquire about the sort of these fruit to understand whether they need to be stored for some time or not to become softer and juicier. Ripe pears usually have smooth, bright and shiny skin of green, yellow or red colors depending upon the sort of the fruit.

 

Do you still hesitate to shop for pears because you are afraid to buy the unripe fruit? If so, then there is one more test you can use to check the condition of pears. Just press the neck of a pear with your thumb a bit to check whether it yields to the pressure or not. If it does, then the fruit is ripe and you can buy it without any hesitations.

 

Suppose, you have purchase ripe pears. How do you know under what conditions it is better to store them? This depends upon the sort of fruit you have purchased, their condition and the time you are going to eat them.

 

If the pears you have bought are not ripe already, keep them under the room temperature during several days. It is better to store them in a dark place to prevent their preliminary spoiling. If you want them to be hard, keep them in a fridge. If you want pears to be soft, take them out of a fridge and leave them on a shelf, for even overnight. It will take the coldness out of them, making pears soft and aromatic. Are the pears ripe already? If so, then it makes sense to keep them in a refrigerator. This will prolong their life, preserving their perfect condition and properties.

 

By the way, there is one more important thing for you to keep in mind if you wish to store pears correctly. While lots of other berries, fruit and vegetables can be stored in a freezer for several months, fresh pears are not recommended to be frozen. This is because ripe pears are very juicy and they will not taste great when you defreeze them. At the same time, you can cook a pear sauce or a topping for pies, for example, and store the dishes in a special container in a freezer for as long as you wish.
